You Laugh You Lose is a blog that challenges readers not to laugh. The game is simple: if you laugh, you lose.

The term “you laugh you lose” emerged from the Internet back in 2005 or so, within *chan boards and other forums. In fact, if you Google the term “you laugh you lose” the top hits are all links to forums, or blog posts about those forums.

Typically, the game is played by posting an image or video in a YLYL thread and challenging respondents to either “win” or “lose” based on how funny the community thinks the posted thing is.

If respondents post replies such as “win”, “winning”, etc, then they are asserting that the posted thing is NOT funny. They didn’t laugh. They didn’t lose.

If respondents post things such as “lost”, “lost hard”, etc, then, guess what, success, the posted thing is a hit.

youlaughyoulose.org was founded in 2008. The purpose of youlaughyoulose.org is to provide a natural selection ecosystem for new memes. There are many other sites that attempt to aggregate organic, comedy content from the Internet, but few succeed in providing a holistic environment for them to grow.
